In 1979, the Beta Montecarlo made a name for itself with its first class wins, and by the end of the season had clinched the manufacturers' world championship in the under two-litre class ahead of BMW and Ford. The following year, the dominance of the Italian marque was no longer in doubt.

ENGINE: 1,425.9 cm3, in-line four-cylinder engine in a central rear position, 2-stroke valve timing and 4 valves per cylinder, with Kugelfischer-Bosch electronic fuel injection. KKK-K27 turbocharger, liquid-cooled, maximum power 420/450 bhp at 8,500 rpm, maximum torque 490 Nm at 6,600 rpm.

SUSPENSIONS: Front, independent with superimposed wishbones and torsion bars; rear, independent McPherson with twin wishbones, swinging arms and stabiliser bar.

BRAKES: Front and rear, self-ventilated steel discs.

WHEELS: Aluminium wheels, front tyres 220/615-16 and rear tyres 300/700-19.

CHASSIS: Central steel and aluminium monocoque with tubular structures supporting the front and rear axles.
